Facebook is tracking everything. You’re not safe anywhere. They even track people who’ve never had a facebook account. They mine your data and then use it to sell you shit you don’t need or want. You can’t escape it. If you don’t live in a secluded cabin in the middle of the woods with no internet, your shit out of luck.
Nothing is sacred to this goliath ad-machine that we’ve let consume every aspect of our lives.
They shamelessly capitalize on your major life events: marriage, death, having a child, moving, etc. They study your habits and show you ads for things they think you’ll buy. And guess what? Chances are you’ll eventually buy something.
People often forget that Facebook also owns instagram and whatsapp. Both give them access to even more data about you.
You can’t escape. Your entire life is on facebook regardless if whether or not you post anything.
Zuckerberg is a money-hungry lizard man in a human skin suit that will shamelessly sell your info. He’ll also eat your nipples.
So What Exactly is Facebook Tracking?
#1. Your Political Preferences
Lol they KNOW who you’re going to vote for. They don’t even need you to post about it. They can correlate a ton of other data about you to infer what your preferences are and it’s scary accurate.
#2. Your Sexuality
Same deal here. They don’t need you to say it. Facebook knows.
#3. Your Culture
Not just general culture either. They can see if you’re multi-cultural and track all the countries you’ve lived in. They can even infer citizenship.
This is useful for all sorts of things. But they use it to sell you stuff.
#4. How to Piss You Off
They know what pisses you off. They thrive on angry comment sections so facebook finds out stuff like your political, religious, and social beliefs and shows you posts that are likely to make you mad or illicit an intense emotional response.
This is because they want to bait you. They want to show you things that engage, enrage, and excite you. And they’re good at figuring out what those things are.
Facebook Tracking Your Habits and Behavior: Dirty Tricks & Secrets
#1. Creating Habits That Trap You
Did you know that habits are nearly impossible to fully rid from your brain once they form? This is because your brain wants to use as little energy as possible on tasks you repeat often because there’s no point in heavily focusing on stuff that could be put on auto-pilot. There’s lots of actual studies that back this up but I’m not going to cite them here because let’s face it you won’t bother to read them, and even if you did the average person doesn’t know how to intemperate a scientific paper anyway.
This isn’t because you’re stupid, it’s just because our education system has failed you. Sorry about that bud.
Once a bad habit is formed, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to rid it from your brain. The best you can do is:
A. Replace it with a healthier habit.
When you feel the need to go check facebook, do something else that is easy, kills time, and is actually useful like cleaning your desk off, or playing with your cat/dog. Or read an actual book.
B. Don’t trigger the habit loop.
Whatever makes you think about doing the bad thing is something to avoid. Turn off notifications, block keywords for things that piss you off, or just log the fuck out so you’re reminded not to mindlessly check facebook all the time.
Facebook is Tracking How to Hack Your Brain (it’s a lot easier than you think)
Facebook is tracking how you use their app, website. and more. Sooooo much more than what should be legal.
They run experiments all the time to see what UX patterns and changes to the interface get them the results they want. This means that for certain users they’ll experiment and see what works and what doesn’t. If they find that something like making a button bigger or changing colors or menus around makes you more likely to stay on the site and click ads, they’ll change the interface for the rest of the users too.
#1. Colors Make a Big Difference
It’s no accident that facebook’s color scheme is a muted blue. Blue has been shown to evoke trust and stability. It sounds stupid but even people who are aware of this still have an unconscious bias that is deeply engrained.
Humans have evolved to feel energized and positive when exposed to blue light. It’s why screens fuck with your sleep, and why if you don’t go out in daylight for a while you start to go crazy.
They also strategically use the color red. Notifications are a core part of how they pull you in and keep you on their site. People are attracted to the color red, it even raises your heart rate when you see it.
It’s the color of blood, a signifier of danger or injury. It’s the color of sunsets that in pre-history signified the coming of nightfall which meant you needed to get somewhere safe before dark.
Warm colors attract people. Red is also bright. It sticks out and draws your attention. Imagine if that little notification icon was grey. Would you be as compelled to check it? Not likely.
#2. They Play to Your Narcism
People care about themselves and what relates to them. That’s why buzzfeed quizzes spread like measles in antivaxers on facebook.
They show your avatar pic in three different places on your main feed. They show you people YOU may know. The create post box is front and center with the prompt “What’s on YOUR mind, [YOUR NAME]?”. They automatically create posts that celebrate things that are important to YOU like a friendship/relationship anniversary, they bombard you with content and suggestions tailored specifically to YOU. YOUR profile is liked to first in the top menu, the side menu, and your feed.
None of this is a mistake. They drown you with your own individuality, and in the process strip you of it.
